Female faecal incontinence can be a very distressing condition as it causes an involuntary loss or leakage of faecal matter.
It is most commonly caused by damage to the muscles around the anus, the sphincter muscles which control bowel movements, and is a common side effect of vaginal childbirth. In fact, women are twice as likely to be affected by accidental leakage from their bowel than men. Faecal incontinence can also be caused by inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis, as well as nerve damage due to various medical conditions or spinal injuries.
