Dermal fillers are injectable products designed to restore lost volume and smooth out lines and wrinkles caused by ageing. Dermal fillers are incredibly diverse.
They can be used to augment the cheeks, enhance and enlarge the lips, re-shape the nose and rejuvenate the backs of the hands, as well as to diminish fine lines and wrinkles such as smoker’s lines, marionette lines and nasolabial folds (nose to mouth lines).

Dermal fillers, also called soft tissue fillers or even lip fillers, are synthetic versions of natural materials, such as hyaluronic acid, which can be used to recontour, rehydrate and rejuvenate the face and hands.
These days, most clinics, including Dr SW Clinics use temporary products which are completely metabolised by the body over time, rather than permanent products which stay implanted in the skin and can cause longer-term problems. Temporary dermal fillers, made from non-animal based hyaluronic acid, are a safe treatment solution for anti-ageing.
Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a natural component of our skin. Our bodies make and use new HA daily. HA molecules within the skin have a hydrating mechanism as they attract and absorb water which helps to visibly plump out skin.
As we age, our bodies don’t produce as much daily HA as they did in our youth and skin can become less hydrated and lose volume. By using scientifically created hyaluronic acid gels, in the form of injectable fillers, we can put back missing hyaluronic acid into the face and hands where it is needed to plump up the skin.
The products are made to last much longer than natural HA produced by the body, so the resulting enhancements are longer lasting and create significant enhancement, as well as stimulating new collagen production in your own skin. Depending on the product type and where it is placed you can enjoy rehydration and rejuvenation for many months, with superficial treatments lasting about 3 months, and deeper, volumising options giving 12 months or more of correction to the area before a repeat procedure is required to maintain the look.
Dermal fillers can be used to correct many areas including:
The main component of the dermal fillers we use at Dr SW Clinics is hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in the body. The molecule attracts water so makes the skin appear plumper and more youthful. As we age our levels of hyaluronic acid deplete so dermal fillers are a way of restoring their reserves in our skin.
If you are bothered by moderate to deep lines and wrinkles such as nose-to-mouth lines, have lost volume in your mid-face or want fuller cheeks or plumper lips, then dermal fillers may be a suitable treatment option for you. Hyaluronic acid is incredibly safe and biocompatible but as with any treatment, you will need a consultation to make sure you don’t have any medical problems that would make you unsuitable for treatment. During your consultation with Dr Wakil, a full medical history will be taken, alongside photographs to compare improvement post-procedure.
You will discuss the areas that bother you and your expectations from treatment so we can be sure that this treatment will achieve your desired results. We may recommend combining dermal fillers with other treatments. If you have a known allergy or sensitivity to Hyaluronic Acid, you will not be suitable for treatment. Also, active infection in the area to be treated, such as herpes simplex (coldsores) will have to be managed before we can complete a dermal filler treatment. If you are pregnant or breast feeding you will also not be suitable for treatment.
Topical or local anaesthetic can be used to minimise any discomfort from the injections, however many of the products that we use come with lidocaine within the syringe so this helps with any discomfort as the product is placed in the skin. The treatment is minimally invasive so you should not experience any significant pain.
Treatment takes around half an hour depending on the number of injections you need.
You may get some mild bruising or swelling after the injections, or pin-point bleeding at the injection sites, but this will only be temporary and should be gone within a few days. Many people experience no downtime at all.
Results of dermal fillers usually last between six and nine months, but it is dependent on the product used and the area treated. It is recommended that the treatment is repeated on a regular basis in to maintain and see the maximum effects as the area will continue to improve over time.
