Even if you follow a healthy lifestyle with a good, well-balanced diet and exercise regime, you may still have small pockets of fat which seem stubborn to disappear and resistant to targeted exercise that you may do to try to reduce them.
Such small areas of fat are ideal for removal using liposuction techniques, such as VASER® Lipo. VASER stands for Vibration Amplification of Sound Energy at Resonance and uses ultrasound energy to help break down the fat cells.

As a nation we are getting fatter and as our waistlines expand so do our hang-ups about our bodies. Many people struggle with excess weight, but there are now a number of minimally invasive solutions, which can help those who are have stubborn areas of fat that are resistant to diet and exercise and can effectively reduce fat in common problem areas such as the abdomen, thighs, buttocks and arms.
Liposuction is a surgical technique which removes fat cells through a small incision in the skin using a cannula and suction. Various liposuction techniques and technologies can be used, depending on the area being treated and the amount of fat being removed.
This treatment, available at Dr SW Clinics, is designed to remove small amounts of fat or pockets of fatty tissue, such as an amount that would fill a soft drinks’ can, and not large quantities or significant areas of fat.
It is ideal for reshaping and recontouring love handles, thighs, muffin tops, upper arms, abdomens, hips or saddle bags and under the chin.
Liposuction can be performed through a simple manual action using a cannula and suction or with energy assistance such as ultrasound or radiofrequency waves to break down the fat cells prior to suction, to make them easier to remove. Using systems such as VASER® Lipo offers treatment with minimal side effects and downtime.
The procedure is performed using local anaesthesia referred to a tumescent anaesthesia or fluid anaesthesia. This is where a small amount of liquid containing the anaesthetic agent (lidocaine) is infused into the tissue to numb the area before the fat cells are suctioned out using the liposuction system.
Your suitability for liposuction will be determined during a consultation with our doctor. A full medical history will also be discussed.
Liposuction is not a cure for weight loss or a means to remove large quantities of fat, so your weight and Body Mass Index (BMI) will be evaluated during the consultation.
If you are in general good health, with an average body shape, and have realistic expectations from this procedure, you will be a good candidate for liposuction.
Pregnant or breastfeeding women are not suitable for this procedure.
Those with a history of poor wound healing or scarring may also not be suitable for treatment.
Liposuction is performed under local anaesthesia to reduce any discomfort during the procedure by numbing the area. You may still feel a sensation of tugging from the cannula movement and suction during the procedure but should not feel any pain during the operation.
The procedure takes up to an hour, depending on the size and number of areas being treated.
Modern liposuction techniques are designed to remove fat with minimal trauma, however you should still expect swelling, bruising and discomfort in the days following any liposuction procedure. Most pain can be managed with over-the-counter pain medications, such as paracetamol, although you may be prescribed additional pain management medication. Depending on the area(s) treated, it may be recommended that you wear a compression garment for the first few days or weeks after treatment to assist in healing and maintaining a good body contouring result from the treatment.
You will be able to return to your normal routine, including work, within a few days of treatment, depending on the extent of the treatment performed. You are advised to start moving as soon as you can after this procedure as walking and keeping your circulatory system active can assist with healing and help to reduce swelling, but strenuous exercise should be avoided for a month, depending on the extent of the liposuction procedure.
Results from liposuction are permanent as the fat cells are removed and do not grow back. However, weight gain can still occur in the remaining fat cells, so it is important that you continue to follow a healthy diet and exercise regime to maintain the results achieved from your liposuction procedure.
